Part One: From Work in Tanzania to Deep Rest on the Island

I went to Tanzania for work, but somewhere along the way, I managed to sneak in a little leisure too.
By the time I got to Zanzibar, baby, I was tired.
Not cute, breezy, “I need a nap” tired. I mean the kind of tired that sits in your shoulders, your lower back, your jaw, and somehow also your spirit. Public health people know this kind of tired. It is the “I have been smiling professionally, taking notes, being useful, and hydrating inconsistently for five straight days” kind of tired.

After a full week of meetings, movement, and activities, I was more than ready to slow all the way down.
And listen, I had no idea just how deeply Zanzibar was about to help me do exactly that.
This was where the pace changed. This was where I stopped pushing and started softening. This was where I remembered that life is meant to be slowed down. Frankly, my parasympathetic nervous system had been begging for a seat at the table.
This post is part one of what could easily be a two-part love letter to relaxing in Zanzibar, because two spa experiences completely defined my weekend on the island.
Part One Begins at Cinnamon Spa
I started my weekend with the Ayurveda Honeymoon Special at Cinnamon Spa. Yes, it was technically meant for couples. Yes, I absolutely secured it for myself anyway.
Frankly, that felt very on brand.
The treatment included a 60-minute full body Ayurveda massage, a 20-minute herbal steam bath, and a 50-minute milk and rice body scrub. The description promised long, flowing massage movements inspired by traditional Ayurveda techniques, designed to help the mind disconnect and create a deep sense of relaxation. The treatment moved from massage to steam to scrub, which honestly sounded dreamy before I even stepped through the door.

And it delivered.
From the moment I arrived, Cinnamon Spa felt like an invitation to exhale. The atmosphere was calm, beautiful, and immediately grounding. It was the kind of place that tells your nervous system, “Hey sis, you can clock out now.”
After a week of being switched on, moving from one obligation to the next, that first moment of intentional stillness felt almost emotional. You know you are exhausted when someone offers you a robe and some soft lighting and you want to cry a little.
The massage itself was exactly what my body needed. The long, flowing strokes worked through the tension I had been carrying all week, and for the first time in days, I felt myself fully land in the present moment. Not thinking about work. Not thinking about logistics. Not thinking about what was next.
Just there.

After the massage came the herbal steam bath, which felt like a bridge between release and renewal. Sitting in that warmth after my body had already been worked on so intentionally made the whole experience settle in even more deeply. It gave me a moment to soften, breathe, and let the relaxation really sink all the way in.
From a public health perspective, I would like to officially recommend a national policy of steam, silence, and nobody asking me for anything.
Then came the milk and rice scrub, which felt soft, nourishing, and luxurious. By that point, I was somewhere between deeply relaxed and spiritually unavailable to any form of stress.
A Different Kind of Arrival
What made Cinnamon Spa so special was that it marked my true arrival in Zanzibar. I may have landed on the island earlier, but this was the moment my body caught up. This was when the stress started leaving. This was when the weekend actually began.
It set the tone for everything that followed.
And the next day, somehow, the relaxation got even deeper.
Coming Up in Part Two: The Hammam
The next day, I visited a hammam spa, and somehow they built on the deep relaxation Cinnamon Spa had already started.

If Cinnamon Spa opened the door, the hammam experience carried me all the way through it.
It was cleansing, restorative, and unforgettable in its own way, and yes, it absolutely deserves a post of its own.
Final Thoughts
If you do nothing else on your next trip to Zanzibar, please add these two places to your itinerary. I mean that.
For me, they were more than spa appointments. They were a reset.

I came to Zanzibar tired. I left feeling softer, lighter, and more connected to myself.
Life is meant to be slowed down, and Zanzibar reminded me just how beautiful that can be.
