Part Two: The Hammam That Took Relaxation to Another Level

Written by Joni Roberts

Traveler, storyteller, and public health advocate

If Cinnamon Spa was my introduction to rest in Zanzibar, the hammam was the experience that took me all the way in.

And let me just say this up front: when I tell you this place was giving, it was giving.

By the next day, I was already feeling lighter from the Ayurveda massage, steam bath, and body scrub at Cinnamon Spa. But somehow, the hammam built on that foundation and took me even deeper. It was less about easing into relaxation and more about surrendering to it completely.

I chose a traditional hammam experience, the Detoxifying Hammam Retreat, a 90-minute treatment designed to cleanse, energize, and restore both body and mind. It included a 15-minute steam session, a 30-minute exfoliating scrub, a 20-minute purifying volcanic mud wrap, and a 25-minute foam massage, all ending with a revitalizing cup of mint tea.

It was exactly what I did not know I needed.

The Steam: Letting Go

The experience began with steam, and it felt like a soft entry into another state of being. After a week of work, movement, and constant activity, simply sitting in that warmth felt medicinal. My body began to open. My breathing slowed. My mind quieted.

It was the kind of stillness that does not ask anything of you. You do not need to perform wellness in a space like that. You just sit, receive, and begin to let go.

As someone trained to think about health systems, community care, and prevention, I feel qualified to say that steam plus silence is a deeply underrated intervention.

The Scrub: Auntie-Level Renewal

Honestly, you have not experienced full-body renewal until you have been scrubbed squeaky clean by an auntie.

If you know, you know.

The Koreans do an amazing job with body scrubs, and I have always appreciated how deeply exfoliating and transformative that experience can feel. But the sister in Zanzibar scrubbed me with a kind of love that felt almost parental, like the way a parent cares for a young child, making sure every trace of the day disappears from the body.

It was thorough, grounding, and oddly comforting all at once. This was not a rushed or performative treatment. It felt intentional. It felt caring. It felt like I was being looked after.

There was something deeply satisfying about that level of exfoliation. It was not just about removing dry skin. It felt like shedding stress, fatigue, and the residue of movement from travel itself.

Honestly, if burnout could be exfoliated, I feel like we were making real progress.

The Volcanic Mud Wrap: Grounded and Restored

Next came the purifying volcanic mud wrap, and this part of the treatment felt deeply grounding. After the intensity of the scrub, the mud wrap brought a different kind of calm. It was cooling, nourishing, and restorative in a way that made the whole experience feel balanced.

There was a rhythm to the retreat that I really appreciated: open, cleanse, soothe, restore. By this point, I felt fully removed from the outside world in the best possible way.

The Foam Massage: Like Being Massaged by a Cloud

The final treatment was the foam massage using aromatic herbal soap, and this was by far my favorite part of the entire experience. My therapist Aisha absolutely did the thing.

The best way I can describe it is this: it felt like being massaged by a cloud. Honestly, it was probably the closest thing to what I imagine bubbles would feel like if they were being rubbed all over your body.

They gathered the soap suds into what felt like a pillowcase and whipped it with air until it became full, fluffy, and unbelievably soft. Then they used that airy, foamy bliss to massage my body in a way that felt both indulgent and surreal.

By then, I was fully gone in the best way. Completely relaxed. No thoughts. Just vibes and bubbles.

If public health is about creating the conditions for people to thrive, then I would like to submit this bubble massage as a pilot program.

Mint Tea and the Beauty of a Slow Finish

To conclude the retreat, I was served a revitalizing cup of mint tea, which felt like such a thoughtful ending. It gave me a moment to sit with everything I had just experienced before returning to the world.

Sometimes the smallest details are what stay with you, and that cup of tea felt like a quiet reminder not to rush back into anything.

Final Thoughts

If part one of my Zanzibar reset began at Cinnamon Spa, part two was completed in the hammam.

Together, these two experiences gave me exactly what I needed after a demanding work trip: stillness, softness, and space to come back to myself.

If you do nothing else on your next trip to Zanzibar, make sure these two places make it onto your itinerary. I mean that. And if you make it to Hamam Zanzibar, definitely check it out.

They were not just lovely spa treatments. They were the reason I truly relaxed.

Life is meant to be slowed down, and Zanzibar gave me the space to remember that.
